How to Buy the JR Pass
Travelers can now buy the JR Pass online from the official website.
However, this direct online purchase only started on June 1, 2020.
Before that, most travelers bought an Exchange Order outside Japan.
After arriving in Japan, they exchanged it for the actual pass at JR stations or airports.

Price Increase in 2023
On October 1, 2023, JR Pass prices increased significantly.
For example:
- 7-day Ordinary Pass
- Before: 29,650 yen ($197.67)
- After: 50,000 yen ($333.33)
Because of this change, many travelers started to question whether the pass is still worth buying.

Comparison with Regular Shinkansen Tickets
Whether the JR Pass saves money depends on the travel route.
Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto
Regular Shinkansen fare:
- One way: about 14,170 yen ($94.47)
- Round trip: about 28,340 yen ($188.93)
In this case, a normal ticket costs much less than the 7-day JR Pass.
Tokyo ⇄ Hiroshima
Regular Shinkansen fare with round-trip discount:
- One way: about 18,570 yen ($123.80)
- Round trip: about 37,140 yen ($247.60)
Therefore, a round trip ticket is still cheaper than the JR Pass.
Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo
