If you’re traveling from Tokyo (Asakusa) to Nikko, there are several options.
Among them, the new limited express by Tobu Railway, Spacia X, launched in 2023, stands out as something special.
At first glance, it looks like a futuristic robot.
But once you actually ride it, you realize the inside is even more impressive than the exterior.
In this article, I’ll share my experience taking the Spacia X from Asakusa to Nikko.
What is Spacia X?

Spacia X is a new limited express train connecting Asakusa and Tobu-Nikko.
The travel time is about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Unlike traditional limited express trains, it offers a wide variety of seating options:
- Standard Seat (regular seating)
- Premium Seat (more spacious)
- Cockpit Lounge (front-row seats)
- Compartment (private rooms)
Rather than just transportation, it feels more like an “experience-driven train.”
Departing from Asakusa | Boarding Process

You board the train at Asakusa Station.
I purchased my ticket in advance through the official website.
Morning departures were almost fully booked—
probably because many people make it a day trip.
When it’s time, that uniquely designed train rolls into the platform.
Honestly, this might be the most exciting moment of the journey.
The Cockpit Lounge is Incredible

This time, I chose the “Cockpit Lounge.”
It’s located right behind the driver’s cabin—the very front row.
The entire front is made of glass.
Which means—
you get a full “driver’s-eye view” the entire ride.
Even if you’re not a train enthusiast, this is simply fun.
Onboard Facilities | A Train with a Café

One of the standout features of Spacia X is its onboard café.
You can enjoy coffee and sweets,
giving it the feel of a moving café.
Prices are slightly on the higher side,
but having a drink in this space feels genuinely special.
Is It Expensive?

Here’s the general price breakdown:
Base fare: around ¥1,400 ($8.75)
Limited express fee: around ¥2,520 ($15.75)
Cockpit Lounge: + about ¥500 ($3.13)
Total: roughly ¥4,420 ($27.63)
To be honest, it’s more expensive than a regular limited express.
But considering it as part of the experience, it feels reasonable.

My Honest Thoughts

What I liked:
- Outstanding design
- The front-view experience is amazing
- Quiet and comfortable interior
What could be better:
- Popular seats sell out quickly
- The café is slightly pricey
- Solo seats are available, which is great for solo travelers
Who Should Ride This?

- Those who want to make the journey to Nikko special
- Travelers bored of regular trains
- Anyone looking to experience a unique train in Japan
On the other hand,
if your priority is saving money, this might not be the best option.
Conclusion
Spacia X is not just a means of transportation—
it’s a train where the ride itself becomes the highlight.
The journey from Asakusa to Nikko takes about two hours.
How you spend that time can completely change your trip.
It’s a bit of a luxury,
but definitely worth experiencing at least once.
