Hirosaki Castle is a historic castle in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture.
The castle was first built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan.
Today the castle stands inside Hirosaki Park, a large park known for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage.
History of Hirosaki Castle
The Tsugaru clan constructed Hirosaki Castle during the Edo period.
The current three-story castle keep dates from 1810, after the original tower was destroyed by lightning. The building is smaller than many other Japanese castles but remains one of the few historic castle keeps in the Tohoku region.
Hirosaki Park
Hirosaki Castle stands in the center of Hirosaki Park.
The park includes moats, bridges, gates, and walking paths. It is known for seasonal scenery throughout the year.
Cherry blossoms
Hirosaki Park has about 2,600 cherry trees.
They bloom in late April, making the park one of Japan’s well-known cherry blossom viewing spots.
Autumn leaves
In October, the park changes color with red and yellow foliage.
Hirosaki Castle Keep
The castle keep has three floors.
Inside the building, visitors can see historical displays about the castle and the Tsugaru clan. The top floor provides views of Hirosaki Park and Mount Iwaki.
Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival
The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival takes place every year from late April to early May.
During the festival, food stalls open throughout the park. In the evening, lights illuminate the cherry trees around the castle moat.

From Tokyo Station, take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori Station (about 3 hours).
Transfer to the JR Ou Line and travel to Hirosaki Station (about 35 minutes).
